So your boss is a slave driver?

How bad is it? Does he make you stay after office hours, go to work on a Saturday, or expect you to finish next month's work – today?

Does he pitch catch phrases like "We are making history here people!"?

You're in a dillema. "Should I stay or should I go?" you ask yourself. You feel overworked, but can't just quit, you have a responsibility to your family.

What to do?

1. Pray.
Whenever you are tempted to run away, run to God instead. Seek for direction. There must be a reason why you are going through this trial. What if 'something good' can come out of it?

2. Think.
You're probably emotional. Postpone, give yourself a week to think clearly. There is wisdom in being patient.

3. Ask a mentor for advice.
He/she may have experienced the same thing. Consider his/her opinion on the matter. There is always something to learn from others.

4. Talk to your boss.
Be respectful. Be honest how you feel about the situation. Describe how the pressure is taking a toll on your work performance, personal life or family time. (proceed with caution)

5. Make a decision.
If you decide to stay, promise yourself not to whine or complain. Instead, find ways on how you can thrive in this 'challenging' work environment. (It was your decision to stay after all)

Staying and doing mediocre work isn't an option. Continue to do your best work. (even if you plan on leaving later)

Now, if you decide to go, make sure it's in good faith.

Practice professionalism. Give proper notice. Turn over work to others properly. Keep your friends (co-workers) and exit gracefully.

Lessons from Kodak, Beepers and Continuous Change

Using the Easy Call paging service wasn't as easy as you would think. Telling an operator to say sorry for you is humiliating. (Dyahe!) Not only that it is hard to dictate an apology to someone you don’t know, the agent seems to always take on a sleepy (bedroom) voice every time you call.

Operator: Easy call Pager Number 141-14344. Your name please? (male bedroom voice)

You: Jhun.

Operator: Is that Juliet, Uniform, November? (confirming)

You: No, Ju-hun, with an 'H'.

Operator: Message please.

You: Ummmm... I'm sorry na...

Operator: [typing sound] Is there anything else?

You: Ummm...Yes. Umm... I won't do it again? (hesitant, but you continue anyway) Ikaw kasi eh, kung di mo lang ginawa yun...

After dictating your insincere apology, you still end up with the four words you should've only said in the first place – “please call me now” or "Turn on your cell phone, I will call you." (During that era, to conserve the 2-hour battery life of cell phones, people only turn it on when someone beeped them.)

In the mid-90s, Globe introduced a better way to communicate – via text messages. (Post star-tac era) The idea that you can send messages without calling an operator was a big relief.

Today, try to design a beeper with state-of-the-art features, sell it at the cheapest price possible, then add extra functionality, still, no one will buy it.

It's simply obsolete.

Somehow, there's a tendency for us to think that if we offer something that's cheaper, bigger, better or with more features of the same-old-boring-product, we will succeed. (Big–Sameness)

Take Kodak for example. They filed their bankruptcy just today. (1/20/12) Even though they were an early pioneer of digital photography, (they had the patents and expertise) they chose to hold on (too long) to their film business. (old success) Obviously, that didn't do them well.

To succeed in business today requires three things :

1. The willingness to let go of what worked yesterday.

2. The ability to make quick decisions.

3. The courage to embrace change.

Get rid of the old ideas that you've heard from your non-practicing professors. (Or the systems in the book you've read ten years ago.)

The world has changed.

Keep your core values and principles, but when it comes to doing things, consider new ways. Adapt to new technologies. Better yet, create it.

Don't wait for someone to kill your product. Instead, make your own product obsolete by building the next big thing.

They say 'Productive Pinoy' is a book that's 'hard to find'.

I've heard this statement a couple of times. I'm not sure if I should be smiling or frowning! It could mean two things depending on the tone.

1. The Good
A lot of people may have bought the book. The nearby bookstore probably ran out-of-stock – making the book hard to find. (it was featured @ Entrepreneur Philippines early this year)

2. The Not-so-good
...Or the book is literally 'hard to find' inside the bookstore! You can find it in the 'Success & Career' section. Please don't hesitate to ask the bookstore rep.

Habits are formed when we do something repeatedly.

Early last year, I tried to go to the gym for 21 days – straight. It worked.

For more than six months, I formed the discipline to go to the gym everyday. (My wife called it a miracle.)

Here's the thing...

When I decided to do it three times a week instead... guess what happened?

You bet.

There's something about 'daily practice' that makes it sustainable.

Looking back to see what you've accomplished so far can be a useful motivation.

However, that isn't true for everyone. For some, it's become a permission to slack off – "Anyways, we're halfway there" the mind justifies.

You're allowed to feel good about your ‘progress’, but let's hold off the victory party until you are 100% done!

Finishers don’t let their small victories get in the way. Their mission is clear. They know what they came for – to finish what they started.

DOT has released a new campaign called "It's more fun in the Philippines." The slogan may not be an original, (Switzerland used it in 1951) but it's simple, catchy and true for us – today. (Try to ask a foreigner or a Balikbayan)

Besides, if you're one of those folks who saw the Swiss ad in your mid 20's, that means you're already in your mid 60s today… Seriously, what's fun today has changed!

"It's More Fun in the Philippines" became an online hit – a twitter trending topic worldwide. Pinoys we're able to identify with it.

You will also see awesome studies in Facebook that include photos of breathtaking places and what you can do in the Philippines. Simply "Put your catchy line in here. More fun in the Philippines."

You can't deny the potential. If implemented right, yes, it can boost tourism spending from both locals and foreigners.

But the challenging part is where to go from here.

It may be a 'fun' campaign, but definitley it will also take a lot of work to make it really work. (Not just for the DOT, but also for the rest of us.)

How can we contribute to 'More Fun' ?

As a business owner or a professional who caters to tourist, (both local and foreign) consider 'fun' as a part of how you do business.

Whether you are operating a restaurant, a travel agency or a small shop, make the "whole experience" fun for your customers. (from booking, to shopping, to waving good-bye)

What you can do :

1. Customer Service Training.
Whether you own a small business or work in a big enterprise, you can empower your employees to 'make it fun' for your customers.

Don't let administrative "policies" hinder you from serving your clients well. Make it fun!

2. Make your website (or online correspondence) easy to understand or easy to use. Be easy to do business with.

It's funny how booking a flight can be difficult at times. Technology was supposed to make it easier for people. Yet, there are times it has become a hindrance instead.

Eliminate the unneeded steps. (read 'hassles') Make it simple, easy to use and straight-forward.

3. Don't just design products, design 'experiences' as well.

My friend Hans Co and his partners own a bike shop called Gran Trail Cycles. Yes, they sell cool bikes, but not just that – they also offer or design biking 'experiences'.

"How about a bike tour to Sagada?" they asked.

Re-examine the business you are in.

4. Be an ambassador of your own country.

Speak well of your country. Your words has the power of life and death. What you say will count. As a Filipino, you can help boost tourism by participating in this campaign. (even in your own small way)

Here's why I think the slogan is true:

"What differentiates the Philippines from every [other place] in the world, as we said from the start, is the Filipino. [It's] his special gift for transforming what is already a beautiful place into an unforgettable special place. You take two identical islands, put Filipinos in one, it’s going to be more fun there."

Meetings can be fun, funny or amusing.

Meetings are fun. Especially when you are working with enthusiastic and creative people. The management made new plans and you were thrilled to hear about it. You leave excited for what's about to happen.

However, the fun becomes funny when you attend the next meeting and find out that nothing has been done. (yet)

In spite of the lack of progress, the funny becomes amusing, when the leader starts to introduce 'new plans' in the same meeting!

Sabi nga nila "Di pa tapos yung sa isa, may ibang plano na!"

Realize that 'meetings' should allow you to work effectively, not distract you from real work.

While we should strive to implement original or killer ideas, we must also keep an open mind and a humble spirit.

Like a small rudder of a big ship, our tongue sets our direction. How we describe or verbalize our work will influence our decision, action and direction.

I like what my friend Malvin Dinlasan wrote in his blog.

"Our common mistake is we designed ourselves in what we think we are and not what we should be. For example, someone says "I am a teacher." Why not say "My passion is to help young individuals think more analytically so they can face the challenges of life."

"See the difference? The first statement is your profession – the uniform you wear that clearly professes what you do. The latter speaks about the purpose why you teach. Which is better?" [link]

Choose your words. Look at your work differently.

"Lakas chamba" I'm sure you know people who win this way. Whether it's in billiards or in bowling, pushing harder may win you a game.

But to win consistently? That's another story.

New year is here. Resolution lists are longer than ever. You will find in people's list the following words ...

…to do more _______
...to be more _______

…to have more _______

…more, more, more.

Yes, productivity is about maximizing the output, but necessarily laboring more.

For a sales entrepreneur, it could mean talking to less people by selling to the right people.

For an office manager, it could mean implementing effective and efficient systems to get all the work done within the 9–5 window. (instead of just asking the workers for an overtime – all the time)

For a leader, it could mean giving up control and allowing others to make wise decisions for the organization.

To win consistently, squeezing for 'more' isn't the answer.

Work effectively, don't just push harder.

Don't write down everything. (Unless you are a journalist or a researcher)

I know. You already tried this. You even attempted to organize your notes by color, by topic or by date. But sad to say, you didn't get things done much this way as well.

Write with a purpose.

Write to get things done. Write to bring clarity to your ideas. Write to communicate. Write to remind yourself.

Write because you will read it later, not just for the sake of writing.

The world wouldn't end if you miss writing something that's forgettable.

What to write?

1. Your commitments. (to others and to yourself)

2. Lists. (to do list, grocery list, etc.) Not only will you save time, but also free your mind for creative or analytical work.

3. Information you'll ~~probably~~ need in the next three months.

4. Rare ideas. Implement it soon or sell the idea to someone who can make it happen.

5. Your expenses. This will help you become aware of your spending habits.

6. Your goals. What are your goals and what are you willing to do to attain them?

One of the best approach is to do a mind map. I got this one from one of our mentors, Ms. Ivy Marquez.

Sometimes we adopt a "come what may" attitude because of a bad memory.

You tried to reach for something, but somehow ended up disappointed. So you go on with your life telling yourself "Hope for the best, expect the worst." But the truth is – you don't even expect or hope for anything at all.

To avoid disappointment, you skip planning. You put off things, even though you're good for it. Without a clue, you've been living aimlessly.

God has a plan for your life.

There’s a twist in your story you haven’t seen. In advance, He has prepared good things for you to see, to experience and to do.

He wants the best for you this year. His will for your life is good, pleasing and perfect.

Seek Him. Pray resolutely.

Because the wise move for you is to 'plan' according to His plan.

The words that we choose can make or break the 'good things' in our lives.

The Top 9 – What we are thankful for this 2011

1. My wife's good health.
"Health is wealth" is a sales pitch I used to avoid. The saying became real to me when my wife went in and out of the hospital for several years. (gall stones, appendectomy, severe migraine, etc)

This 2011, I thank God for a hospital-free year. I don't miss sleeping in the 'transformer' sofa bed.

2. Stronger relationship with the kids.

I make time for each one.

My eldest son, Trey, outsmarts me from time to time. Russel uses his charm to get what he wants. Jaden is the playful one. (Kanino nagmana? Don't ask!)

This year we've built a stronger connection. I'm blessed to be their father.

3. New & Old Friendships.

You didn't expect to be friends with them. Why would you? You guys have nothing in common. But you meet new people and somehow, you enjoy their company.

You're surprised to discover you have more things to share than you think.

My wife and I apreciate our newfound friends as much as we treasure our lifelong friendships.

4. Friday men's group.
'Hungarian Sausage Breakfast set' - that's what we order week in and week out.

Every Friday, I go to a men's meeting called Victory Group in Bo's Coffee Alabang. We learn from the bible how it is to be a disciple of Christ. We share, discuss and encourage one another. To witness what God has done in the lives of these men builds up my faith in God. Thank you Pastor Ariel Marquez for leading this group.

5. Our new home.
Technically, we acquired our new place late last year. Though, after a year, I'm still thankful to God for allowing us to have this place. (So far so good with my monthly payments!)

6. Our business.
In case you're wondering what I do for a living, I'm in the real estate business. (I write for a different reason)

It's been an awesome three months. The book has received fifteen (15) fine reviews. It's been featured in several radio-tv shows. Recently shown in the "12 Gift Ideas for the Start-up Entrepreneur" by Entrepreneur magazine online.

But the best part is meeting the interesting people I would not have met otherwise.

We thank our friends who helped us promote the book!

8. For being a Finalist at the Philippine Blogger Awards 2011

Believe me. There are days when you feel there's no one reading your blog. But I'm glad I continued writing anyway.

Hundreds of blogs were nominated at the 2011 PBA Awards. To be considered as a 'finalist' in one of the categories is truly an honor in itself.

9. For God's work in our lives.

Life may have its ups and downs, but God's grace is constant. It is sufficient. We thank God for the life that we have today and we look forward to what he has prepared in advance for us. Our prayer is that our lives will bring honor and glory to the LORD.

What makes it a gift?

A gift is freely given. If I'd require one from you, it's no longer a gift. It becomes a demand.

A gift isn't a transaction. It's delivered without expecting something in return.

A gift is freely received and appreciated. You shouldn't send it back to the gift-giver.

A gift may be given out of love, appreciation or obligation. You are wise enough to do it for the first two reasons.

Jesus didn't have to do it. Yet, he came. He lived, he taught, he gave us hope. Then he died for us so that we can be free – and truly live.

It was out of His love. A gift, freely given. Nothing required in return. All you have to do is to receive it, be thankful with it, and share it to others.

We thank you Jesus.

Do you only try when you're most likely to succeed? Or do you apply faith to create your chances?

Take wise risks. Take a stand. Be willing to do what others aren't willing to do.

"Will this ever work?" isn't the question to ask. It's "How quickly can I make this work?"

"Yes, but..." : How to use the word 'BUT' (20sec read)

'BUT' is a word we use to contrast something.

"That's good, but..." (reason why it's not)
"Yes, but..." (no)
"I believe, but..." (I doubt it)

Many times when a period would suffice, we can't help it, we still say 'but'.

Leave out the negative 'buts'. Mainly the ones that pull down good ideas, zealous spirits or 'aha' moments.

Instead, put it to good use.

"It's a stretch, but it's possible"
"I'm tired, but it's going to be worth it"
"Life is hard, but God is good."

MOST EMBARRASSING MOMENT OR 5-SECONDS OF FAME?

In a crowded Starbucks, I nudged a tray and accidentally dropped a plate off my table. Just like in the movies, I saw the plate fell in slow motion. As soon as it crashed the floor, silence entered the room and all eyes zoomed at me.

I can still hear the sound of the espresso machine hiccuped.

I froze for a second – quickly thinking how to react. I smiled, made an 'Ooops!' facial expression, and pretended as if it wasn't me.

Then one by one, they all looked away.

It could have been my most embarrassing moment, but I chose to look at it differently...

It's my 5-seconds of fame!

My realization – The way we look at our circumstances matter a lot.

Think Less. Thank More.

Put out your best work not to impress people. Do it as if you were doing it for the Lord. (Col 3:7) He gave you your abilities in the first place. You have his approval – even before you asked.

As you do this, watch how your work add value to your organization. And if you do well, your boss might become happy as an end result.

Don't Ambush. Connect instead.

You were walking around the mall on a Sunday to unwind, relax or take a break. From afar, you see a booth, but you don't have a clue what it's about.

"Sir, my name is Bobby. I'd just like to take two minutes of your time" a well-dressed rep respectfully asks you.

You have three options – look sideways and turn a blind ear, say yes and endure what he has to say, or offer a sincere "I'm sorry, I need to be somewhere" excuse.

Two minutes is short. Why do people say NO?

Here's why – People hate being ambushed. (No matter how sincere you are or the cause is.)

They want to feel good about a contribution, a donation or a purchase. 'Disruption' won't do the trick.

How to fix it?

Connect, even without saying words. Make the 'booth' interesting enough to strike a conversation with strangers. Bring a real panda or a sea turtle if you have to. Emotional connection enable ideas to spread. (You want me to feel for those creatures right? And it will cost P12,000/24 months?)

Make it "their idea" or "own initiative" to approach you. This way, you won't need to ask. Chances are, they'll give you more than the two minutes you were asking for!

WHERE TO PUT YOUR TIME THIS DECEMBER

1. Take the time to Thank God...

...not just for the 13th month pay! Yey.

Thank Him for the life that you have. It may not be perfect, but I'm sure you are thankful for many things.

"Thank you Jesus night" is a Christmas tradition that we do every December. My wife and I along with our kids, block off a night to count our blessings. We write it down.

It's a simple activity. Cut the paper into small pieces. On each piece, write one thing you're thanking God for. Do this for 10-15 minutes. Then take turns and share with each other what you wrote. After reading one, put the piece of paper in the box.

"Thank you Jesus for _________." You will be surprised with what your kids will remember.

When you're done, seal the box and keep it as a family treasure. As of this date, we have records up to 2003. Play music and serve hot chocolate. Enjoy!

2. Live as if it's your last 30 days on earth.

The holidays prompt us Pinoys to eat this way – as if it's our last days on earth. With all the exquisite food in front of you, how could you say no? No wonder, "to lose weight" is #1 in the new year's resolutions list.

It's fun to attend parties, but don't forget the essentials – the people you love, the work you're called to do and your quiet time/rest. Make time, don't find time.

3. Plan for year 2012.

Ready or not, the year will start. Be prepared to hear someone say, "Ambilis 2012 na!"

Start the year with a clear direction, an action plan and with the confidence that comes with preparation.

Some questions ...

What are the changes that you want to implement in your life or business this coming year?
What are new things you're considering to pursue?
What's one thing that you've been putting off for the last few years?

4. Start going to Church this December.

If you haven't been to one, there are many Christian churches you can attend to. I go to Victory Alabang.

I go to church for three reasons:

First, to hear from God. Faith comes from hearing the Word. It's how I know God's will for my life.

Second, to spend time with God's people. Somehow, our destinies are intertwined. I get to learn from others. We help and build up each other. Our kids grow together. We share lives.

Third, to worship the Lord. It's the only thing I can give to God. Everything else is for my benefit.

I know. The first time I attended a Christian Church, I didn't get it too. I thought people were singing and dancing to entertain themselves.

Now I understand. It's to give honor and praise to God.

Just like what the Magi did after traveling from afar. As soon as they arrived the place where Jesus was born, the first thing they did was to bow down and worship him. Likewise, let's use our time this season, to honor our LORD and Savior, Jesus.

KAYA MO!

Have you been thinking of doing something ambitious?

Wait for a few seconds. You'll hear a voice in your head saying... "Hindi mo kaya yan." Four ordinary words, but when put together, it's deadly. Instantly killing your idea. Once you believe it, negativity follows.

"You don't have enough experience."

"Nobody will back you up."

"No one will like your work."

"Hindi ka marunong mag-english."

"Wala ka namang kilala."

"Baka mapahiya ka lang."

There's a long list of reasons why shouldn't act on your vision. Some are valid concerns, though many are just fears.

You either end up dismissing the idea or you proceed with caution, fear or worry – paranoid you're bound to fail.

How do you move forward?

1. Face the valid concerns.

If you feel inadequate, then take the time to equip yourself. Acquire whatever 'skill' or 'know-how' you need. Set a month or two to learn. If that isn't enough, set more time or find someone who can help you.

Always operate in your God-given strengths. You've been given this gift for a purpose. Align your gift with work or pursuits that are worth doing.

It's alright to ask questions. Even what appears to be a stupid question can work out as a gem only if you'll ask. Figure out how things work. Experiment and poke around.

Lazyness will tell you 'bahala na', but preparation makes things easier. Ask "what's the worst-case scenario?" If all fails, what can you do to recover? How can you prevent it? Proper planning not only allows you to minimize your risk, but also enables you to maximize your success.

2. Conquer your fears.

Let's admit it. Nobody wants to fail.

"Nakakahiya pumalkpak." You may be thinking, "What will they think of me?" or "What if nobody likes my work?"

True. That's how I felt the first time I asked my friends to read the draft of my book, Productive Pinoy. But I realized that I have more to gain than to lose.

It's what you do with the feedback that counts. Use it to make your work better.

The uneasyness is temporary. You'll appreciate that you took a step of faith – once you get moving.

3. Start trying.

Sashimi.

The first time my mom offered it to me, I didn't know what to say. Why in the world will I eat raw fish?

I tried anyway. If I didn't, I'd be missing a lot of good food today.

You've got to start trying. Even if it's just a small bite. Trying allows you to discover things for yourself. Remember when Peter asked Jesus if he could also walk on water? Well, Peter did.

Who knows? You'll probably know what to do from there. You'll probably meet people along the way who'd be willing to help you. You'll probably achieve more than you've hoped for.

Not trying is as good as failing. Give yourself the chance to succeed.

Instead of believing that discouraging voice that's stopping you, tell yourself... "Kaya to."

Instead of putting down a friend, tell her ... "Kaya mo."

Instead of feeling inadequate, let's tell ourselves... "Kaya natin."

When you're tired, shout it out loud... "Kaya pa."

When you feel hopeless, look up, maniwala ka, "Kaya nya."

THE SECRET TO SUCCESS

Walk into a bookstore aisle, you'll see hundreds of books with a title that reads something like "The Secret to Success."

It comes in different forms, sizes, colors – written by different authors from diverse industries. Every book attempts to unfold 'the secret' to building wealth. From attracting good 'vibes' to 'no money down' deals, you won't know which book to pick up first. You'll end up more confused.

There are many techniques, know-how or life skills one can learn. There are many stories that can inspire, motivate or move us toward our dreams.

But the question remains, "What is success to us?"

No doubt, more money in the bank, isn't. You've seen rich men die broke and empty. Even power, fame and fortune is a boring story you don't want to watch in the cinema nowadays.

Instead, most of us picture success as 'the good life.' Yes, the families you see in the insurance brochures, corned beef TV commercials and housing billboards. To some, it's about owning their own time and being able to do their own thing.

We've gone a step smarter. Now, we are not just after the money, but we are looking for freedom, healthy relationships, security, significance and meaning.

All of which we have the tendency to try to attain on our own.

No matter how smart, sincere or persevering we are, the day when "nothing seems to be working" comes. We try harder, but that seems to make things worst.

Don't quit.

Yes, a life of abundance is waiting for you, but you need to look in the right direction. You may need to take a u-turn. Go back to where you're supposed to be.

You may have forgotten that you were never alone. He has always been with you. He has witnessed your challenges. He felt your heartaches. He understands your situation.

There's no secret to success. It's been there for you to know all along. Stop looking in the wrong places.

"He who pursues righteousness (close & right relationship with God) and love, finds life, prosperity, and honor." – Proverbs 21:21

Take a fresh look. Renew your pursuit.

Love God. Love your neighbors. Move within His favor.

Pursue Him.

Life, prosperity and honor will follow.

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE NAIA 1 – RENEWING THE AIRPORT EXPERIENCE

Traveled abroad during the long weekend? You may have seen the real condition of NAIA Terminal–1. Witnessing it being labeled as "the worst airport in the world" has led me to write this blog post.

10 WAYS TO IMPROVE NAIA TERMINAL–1

1. Renovate and Improve.
Instead of just watching from the sidelines, Kenneth Cobonque, Budji Layug and Royal Pineda took the initiative. They made a pro-bono design proposal on how we can renovate NAIA 1. If you haven't seen their proposal, watch this video.

Renovation is a doable option. Yes, it's a good idea to use the airport in Clark for international flights, but this doesn't mean we shouldn't improve NAIA–1. A fresh, renewed, positive atmosphere will definitely make travelers feel more at ease or comfortable.

If our local malls are able to provide hotel-like restrooms, why can't our own airport? You'll probably find the answer in #2.

2. Reinvest the Terminal Fees / Airport Taxes.
It's about time to review the budget and ask, "Where is the money leaking?"

The fees collected must go back into maintaining, improving or expanding the airport facility.

3. Make More Money
If the revenues aren't enough to maintain the airport, then we should find more ways to make money.

If you've been to Singapore's airport, you may have seen how they've built a commercial area filled with specialty stores and food concessionaires. It's a great bonding place for the family and collecting rental income is one easy way to build revenues.

4. Highlight the Filipino Hospitality
We Filipinos are known to be hospitable in our own homes. We never fail to say "kain tayo" whenever a visitor drops by during meals. Why not practice the same Filipino hospitality in our airports whenever someone arrives or departs?

Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

It starts with having a clean, decent and functional airport, but what will set us apart is the Filipino warmth, smile and genuine care for others. Let's make them feel wanting to come back.

5. Quality Service for Travelers
Unlike Filipino Hospitality in which we freely give, providing quality service goes with the job description - we are paid and expected to do it.

Quality service goes beyond the "good morning – good evening" courtesies similar to what we get in a typical fast-food chain, but instead, it should address the specific needs of travelers.

Reliable Help Desk – There's a first time for everybody. Many first-time travelers or visitors may not have an idea what to do or where to go. Provide friendly assistance.
Lost Baggage? Stop pointing them to the wrong direction instead, assign people who will offer sincere help.
Baggage Handling – The handlers behind the conveyor belt should do their jobs with extra care. Wag po sana basta ibalibag ang luggage sa conveyor belt!
Get rid of "I'm not paid to do that" attitude – Helping travelers find their way is the right thing to do – even if it means not getting any tip. Every airport representative should put this to heart.
Airport website – Don't stop with a FAQ page, but use this website to suggest ways on how the traveler can make his stay in the airport smooth, fun and pleasurable.

6. Continuously aim to shorten lines. Streamline the process.

Management should commit to continuously manage the 'waiting-in-line time' of passengers. The best way to do this is to define a standard – "A traveler should only fall in line for a maximum of (X) minutes." Then design the procedure and flow based on the defined standard.

Streamline the Process
Forget opening the trunk of my car if you won't check it properly – Don't do it just for compliance. Make every stop purposeful. If there's a way to combine stops or checks, please do it. This will save a lot of time for both the traveler and the airport personnel.

Side note: Some Filipinos should learn how to fall in line properly.
Here's what happened to us at the check-in counter – A group of five people were in line ahead of us. Suddenly, three people show up with their luggage, apparently, they are a part of that "group", so they joined them. Then, another three came along.

All of a sudden, we found ourselves at the end of a longer line.

7. The small details matter. It will add up and create the "Airport Experience"

Provide better trolleys. Yes, it's a small detail, but it matters. "Yung walang kabig po pag pinatakbo." Much time and energy inside the airport is spent pushing trolleys. Why not make it pleasurable for everyone?
Airport Map – No one will get lost. No one will be late. And no one can say "I wasn't informed!" Include a step-by-step guide for smooth travel.
Signages – Make it big, clear and easy to understand.
Baggage Storage – a place where you can leave your stuff while going around the airport.
Baggage Conveyor Belt – To eliminate overcrowding, build longer conveyor belts. Make it clean and dry, so my luggage won't get oily.
Comfy Seats – you'll spend most of your time seating. Why not make it comfortable? Kenneth Cobonpue is a world-class industrial designer known for the popular furniture pieces he makes for Hollywood celebrities. We should ask him how we can make this happen.
Communication area – Charging Station, Internet and a reliable WIFI connection isn't a bonus anymore, it's the new standard.
Best Filipino Food – Whenever we travel abroad, I look forward tasting the 'authentic food' while at the airport. Foreigners or visitors probably would like to do the same.
Provide a corner where we can promote the best of the Philippines – The airport is a gateway. It's the best place to "sell" what the Philippines has to offer. Let's pitch the best places to visit, food to taste, cultural shows to watch and fun activities to do – all in one corner.

8. Security & Safety
Here's the funny thing. Most of those who complained about the lack of security and safety weren't referring to terrorist activities or bomb threats.

They were referring to pickpockets and rude airport security officers.

Airport Security – Your goal is not only to control and provide physical security, but also to provide emotional security or peace of mind. Your job includes making everyone feel safe. Consider your approach, your tone of voice and attitude while on the job. Allow these reviews to bring out the best out of you.

9. Better Hiring Decisions
"You are the company" is a popular marketing phrase. It implies that any frontline personnel should act as an ambassador of the organization.

When qualifying applicants, we should ask, "Would I like this person to represent the Philippines?"

Hire people who are ...

competent, but friendly
fun, yet professional
strong in Filipino values
willing to contribute and influence positive change

After getting the right people on board, it's essential to provide an on-going training program. Not only will this serve the public better, but it will also enrich their capabilities.

10. Make it Fun.
A huge percentage of passengers travel for fun. Even those who are visiting for business make it a point to include leisure in their itinerary. Who said airports can't be fun and professional at the same time?

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR SERVICE FALLS SHORT

"Pasensya na sir" – that's all you get after waiting nearly an hour for your order in a supposed-to-be fastfood restaurant.

It's the same answer you get when you return a defective item to a store clerk – kilometers away from your house. How about when a service clerk overlooked an important detail on a job you asked him to do?

Now, even if they genuinely said 'sorry', you still feel bad. Why?

Because somehow, you know that your time is worth something. And just to get things right, you'll have to set other things aside. Not only you burn more fuel, but you take an extra effort to go back to a store just to return or exchange an item. It's a hassle.

The service person may not have enough power to do anything, but you – the entrepreneur, there's an opportunity for you in these circumstances.

As a business owner you can turn these "unpleasant experiences" into memorable ones.

The opportunity is in knowing what to do when your service falls short. Responding wisely will set you apart from the competitor – next door.

What if instead of just saying sorry, compensate for the hassle.

Making it right isn't enough. You're paid to do that. Instead, do more than what's required. That's what it means to compensate.

For a restaurant owner, this can mean offering something for free – perhaps complimentary dessert with coffee. Isn't that a treat? It's proven – Masarap ang libre.

For a hotel owner – it means upgrading their room with no extra charge or maybe throwing in two tickets for a musical held at the hotel. Who doesn't want to feel like a VIP?

For an airline – it shouldn't end with just retrieving your lost baggage or giving you free toothbrushes. I'd personally appreciate an upgrade to a first class seat or a free ticket even if it's for a nearby destination. If that won't work, bring me to Duty Free, at least I'll have something to wear while you're looking for my luggage!

Warning: Customers know if you're just throwing in some 'bait' to get more of their business. They are smart.

Be genuine. Give freely. Empower your people not only to make it right, but to do more for the customer – make it a point to leave them feeling alright.

HOW TO SELL YOUR IDEAS

Make things simpler, the complex isn't impressive.

2. Design is not just what it looks like and feels like. Design is how it works.
It's not coming up with something that's 'mas mura' or 'mas maganda'. It's not just about building a better mousetrap.

People bought Apple products not because it was cheaper or technically more superior, it was because it really 'felt' better and was designed to work better.

3. Find the work you love. Don't just settle.
Avoid the "ganyan talaga ang buhay" pity parties. Watch this video.

4. Think differently.
"Iba mag-isip" is a phrase we negatively say. But it can also be something that we can flip positively. We don't need to do what the others (in our field) are doing. We, Pinoys, don't need to think alike. We can complement each other by thinking differently.

5. Don't waste your time living someone else's life.
You are gifted to do something remarkable. Discover that gifting. Honor your parents, but you don't need to live the same lives or bring closure to their frustrations.

6. You can make a dent in the universe.
You are not expected to change the entire world, but you can at least make a dent in your field or in the work that you do. Not everyone will, but be the one who chooses to.

BE AN EXTRAORDINARY PINOY

Pinoys are masters when it comes to blending in or pakikibagay.

We can easily conform and go with the flow. We are careful not to make a scene. To be called as 'one of the guys' will always be counted as a compliment. If needed, we will even exert an extra effort not to be seen as 'different'.

We try not to stand out because we are afraid to be misunderstood.

You will notice this in simple conversations. When someone compliments a person, “ang galing mo naman,” the initial response would be, “hindi naman... nahirapan nga ako eh." Instead of just saying “Thank you”, we try to be modest.

Or maybe you've had this conversation with your friend...

Friend: "Huy, ang ganda naman ng shirt mo."

You: "Divi lang yan."

Friend: "Ows?"

You: "Oo no, inutang ko lang nga yan eh!"

She didn't ask where you bought it! But somehow, you answered this way because you don't want her to think it's expensive or that you've spent for yourself.

It's the same with our work. We don't want the people around us to think that we are too good or too competitive. We'd rather wait for a go signal than take initiative because we don't want to be labeled as 'bibo'. So, we stick to the predictable. We avoid being a stand out. We conform and do only what's expected or required.

There's nothing wrong with being extraordinary.

The difference between the ordinary and extraordinary is the word 'extra'. It's through these 'extras' that you're able to contribute – uniquely. It's how you make an impact in the lives of others. It's what you bring to the table. It's what others can't offer, and only you can. It's how you differentiate yourself, in a good way.

Let your unique style add color to the big picture.

It's OK to be an extraordinary Pinoy. It's OK to stand out.

ADVICE FOR JOB-SEEKERS

Last week, I was able to help someone get a job.

My friend is a young graphic artist who recently resigned from his employer for personal reasons. I introduced him to another friend who owns a design consulting firm. I guess my timing was just perfect. They're both happy to have found each other.

As easy as it may sound, this doesn't happen everyday. Often times, new graduates or jobseekers tend to wait for a long time before they are able to get a job.

Now, if you're someone wondering...

"Bakit kaya wala pa ring tumatawag? 'Fleasing fersonality' naman ako! Namumuti na buhok ko kakahintay for a job interview!"

Here are some things that you may need to consider:

(1) How many résumés did you send?
Jobseekers tend to send résumés to one or two companies and expect something to happen immediately. That's a common mistake.

First, most companies put out hiring announcements months before they need to hire. While you're desperate, waiting for a call, there's a chance that the company (you sent your résumé to) is just taking it easy. They're not in a rush to hire.

Second, if you need a job soon, why not apply to at least 15 companies? Imagine, if two of those companies decide to hire you after the interview, you still get the privilege of choosing one. (Ikaw pa ngayon ang mayabang! You can say, "I turned down their offer." Mas ok di ba?)

By not sending more of your résumé, you've imposed a limit on yourself. But if you'll submit more, you'll have more options.

(2) Apply for a job that fits you. (Type of work that you're good at)
Putting in your résumé "any job available" is not a wise idea. The company you want to work for knows what kind of talent they're looking for. So should you.

(3) The résumé shouldn't be all about you.
It's also about the job you're applying for. Show the employer how you fit into the job position. If given the chance to work for the company, how can you contribute to their need?

(4) Is your résumé presentable?
People will always judge a book by its cover. So will employers judge you by the kind of résumé you submit. After a quick look, they'll decide if you're worth giving the 'air time' for an interview.

Check for correct grammar and spelling – your attention to detail is important.

Use quality paper – To stand out from a stack of résumé, print it on premium paper. Don't pinch a penny in exchange for not getting a monthly income.

Attach a photo that's taken by a professional photographer. Don't crop your head shot from one of your barkada's photo.

Keep your design clean and elegant. Avoid adding unnecessary elements that will add clutter. (No floral design or glitters please)

Instead of just listing your previous job title, emphasize the contribution you made from your last employment.

Remember, the purpose of a résumé is not to get you a job, but to make yourself interesting so that you can get an interview.

(5) Consider working for a small business owner.
Unlike a big corporation, small business owners conduct the interview themselves. They are more inclined to chat longer and they tend to decide based on gut feel. If you're trustworthy enough, they might even promote you as 'kanang kamay'.

(6) Get more experience.
Work for free. Did I just hear someone say, "What!!!... Free?"

Yes, free.

The best way to convince an employer to hire you is to show them what you can do. Sometimes just referring to the 'paper' won't do you justice. But if they can witness how well you work with others, they'll be willing to hire you as soon as a job position is available.

Now, even if they don't, you can still add the real-life work experience into your credentials.

(7) Find a mentor.
Do you know of someone successful that you want to emulate? Maybe an uncle who've put up a business? Or a family friend who is also an executive in a reputable company?

Ask him to be your mentor. Let him bring you around and teach you. Ask him how he started in his business or career. Listen to his advice. If he sees you eager enough, chances are, he will help you get started.

(8) Get rid of the 'entitlement' attitude.
I've met jobseekers who thinks that the government or private companies owe them a job. (I'm sure you don't think this way!) They don't owe us anything.

It's our duty to look for a job. We are responsible for our own future.

Now, the pointers above are just some tips on how to get a job-interview. The interview itself is another matter.

Apply what you've learned in here. Remain to be teachable and keep an enthusiastic attitude.

WHERE TO PUT YOUR PRECIOUS TIME

This is going to be a short post.

You have 24 hours a day. You need at least 8 hours to sleep. You'll probably spend a couple of hours on the road commuting. If your priorities are well-defined, I'm sure you've set ample time for family and friends.

Now because you don't want a boring week, you'll probably spend some time for recreation or leisure.

Life is without meaning without spending time with your Maker. That's non-negotiable.

Now, where should you spend the remaining of your time?

Answer – On what you do best. Operate in your area of strength instead of just spending most of your time compensating for your weaknesses.

Your assignment: Know your core-competency. What do you do best? What's so unique about you and your work? What can you bring to the table that the others can't?

This is where you should invest your precious time – on work where you make a unique difference.

"STEADY KA LANG"

We live in an accelerated world. Everything is moving fast.

Today, even the pizza gets to your home faster than the police. To get an answer, it only takes a second for Google to answer. With a few clicks, you can plan your travel anywhere around the world, no need to fall-in line to consult a travel agency.

What we used to do for hours or days, we do it now almost instantly.

That's why we are not used to waiting anymore. To the point that we think waiting is hard, even if it's just sitting it through.

It's also the reason why sometimes, when we don't get what we want instantly, we move-on. We move on, not to better alternatives, but to wrong choices.

Waiting is good for us. Many times it's God's way of strengthening us. It's His way of preparing us for greater work.

Pretty much like a how a butterfly waits before it can fly. A small caterpillar comes out from an egg. (first instar) His one and only job – to eat continuously.

Even if he is in a hurry, the caterpillar needs to crawl, slowly. He knows he'll be a butterfly someday, yet no amount of positive thinking can make him fly. Not yet.

Because his skin can't grow with him, he then grows a new skin underneath, and then he lets go of his old skin. (molting) Like a boring routine, he repeats this molting over and over again – five times.

He matures slowly. Stage by stage. Little by little. Can you imagine him being impatient?

For the last time, he molts again, but this time differently. The new skin underneath forms the outer shell of the chrysalis. (Pupa - Similar to a Cocoon)

At this time, his mission is clear – to wait.

He can't go anywhere. He can't move forward. But nonetheless, even if no activity is seen on the outside, transformation is happening inside. His body transforms. His wings are fully formed.

After 10 to 14 days of waiting, the butterfly is ready to see the world, differently.

It may sound ironic, but sometimes, the 'best move' for us is to WAIT. You may feel that nothing is happening, but there is a great possibility that transformation is happening inside you.

No matter what happens, never, ever, make the wrong choice – only because you can't wait.

The next time a friend tells you, "Steady ka lang", consider his advice. It might be good for you.

We can use this pakikisama trait to productive use. Not for others to take advantage of us, but for us to be able to sincerely help others succeed.

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER

A boxing match doesn't start in the ring, it starts in a press conference. For some reason, boxers 'bad mouth' their opponent as if the points were counted.

As a boxer, no matter how tough you sounded while holding the mic, if your opponent in the ring gets the chance to punch you really hard in the chin first, most likely you'll be knocked out.

You can keep on telling people you're a champ, but your words won't matter if you get knocked-out first.

Remember when you were a child? You believed every funny and scary story your uncle told you. As if it's a fact. Then you tell the same stories to your friends. Only embarrassed to find out later on that the stories were just fiction. (Kwentong Barbero!)

That's when you decided to pay attention to their action instead of just the words they say.

Why does action speak louder than words?

Unlike words, your actions can't lie. Instead, it confirms what's in your thoughts or intentions. You can retract a statement or change your opinion anytime but you can't undo something that's already done.

Don't get me wrong, 'Words' do speak. But ACTION speaks louder. It tells what you don't need to say.

That's why, "Do as I do" is more effective than 'Do as I say'.

There is a time...

...to plan.
...to explore.
...to weigh.
...to consider.

Then, there's the time to do something... new.

My guess is that every time that you go to your favorite restaurant, you always ask for the menu. You plan to order something you haven't tried before. You explore what's new. You weigh your options. And carefully consider what will satisfy your taste buds.

But then... After several minutes...
You end up ordering the same food that you always order!

Your taste buds tell you to try something new. But your mind reminds you to stick to the familiar. It warns you, "don't take the risk!".

Facing the unknown is uncomfortable. Like the feeling you get when you're stuck in an elevator, alone with someone you don't like kind-a-way.

Trying something new is unnatural for us. We prefer the familiar. We prefer the calculated. We prefer to know what to expect.

We hate disappointments yet we like good surprises.
Many times we need to try out new things.

We need to ...

... Look from a different perspective.
... Consider new ideas.
... Explore new methods.
... Implement new approaches.
... Trust a new friend.

Don't fall in love with the old and proven 'idea'. Don't fall in-love with what's working today. It may not work for tomorrow.

Explore the great possibilities and take a step forward.

Don’t hesitate to reassess your goals every now and then. There are things that seemed promising years ago but has become irrelevant today. You may have outdated goals in your list that you need to update.

Take the time to Stop, Look or Listen.

Stop • At some point, you need to stop to be able to evaluate if you need to alter your course. The time lost when you stop is less compared to the time wasted when you go full speed ahead in the wrong direction. The turn around time will cost you more.

Look • What’s happening around you? What are the new opportunities unfolding?

Listen • There is a big difference between hearing and listening. Be alert, pay attention and understand.

After reassessing, go ahead and move forward to the direction that will bring you closer to your goals.

It doesn't take a genius to spot something that went wrong. It's easy to spot a problem. Everyone wants to do it. People will raise their hands and volunteer to get a piece of it. Almost anyone is capable of being a problem finder.

A Solver is a novelty. They are rare -- hard to find and distinct. They do the things that others stay away from. While everyone is still pointing a finger, the solver is already taking the first step to bridge the gap between 'what is' and 'what could be'.

While the problem-finder is still making side comments on how to get things done, the solver, on the other hand, gets his hands dirty, not waiting for permission, approval or a nod.

The Solver adds value while the problem-finder add noise.

Be the Solver. Add value. Resist the temptation to speak quickly. Take action when there is an opportunity to do so!

I took the photo below when we had our vacation in Bangkok last December. We stayed there for 5 nights.

One of our main agenda was to enjoy it's local food. We ate in familiar places like the Siam Center, MBK, Center World and the Suan lum Night Market. Whether in a food court or in a nice restaurant, I would make it a point to order Pad Thai.

One night, after going on a bargain shopping in the 'Baiyoke' Pratunam area, we passed by an alley with a couple of street food vendors. It was a lane filled with irresistible delicacies.

From afar, I noticed a corner with a lot of people standing around something. It was like a commotion. Now, because I came from the country of uziseros, I stopped and looked what's the buzz all about. Who knows? Maybe it's Jackie Chan.

It was this Pad Thai vendor.

I stopped for a few minutes to watch him cook. One by one, he placed the ingredients gracefully, like an action movie scene in slow motion. He worked flawlessly. He made cooking like an artwork.

He gave me no choice, but to order. Besides, no one stopped me. (Obviously, my wife was too busy..... shopping)

For only 40 Baht (70% less of what I paid in the restaurant), that was the best Pad Thai I've tasted in Bangkok.

As of writing, I've forgotten what's the food like in MBK or Siam, but I definitely won't forget this guy who made this awesome Pad Thai.

Many business leaders today equate "winning" to beating the competition. The focus shifts from the customer to dominating the market share. The most important person (the custome) becomes a number or a statistic. While employees are exhausted for chasing after unreasonable quotas.

How to Brainstorm a Business Idea

There are many business opportunities around you (left and right) only if you keep an open mind.

Here’s a simplified version on how you can brainstorm about it:

1. Find a need or a problem around you. (customers)
These people are all waiting for someone to solve their problems. They are ready to listen.

2. Provide a solution. (your service or product)
Some may know what kind of 'solution' they need, but for most, they'll just know it when they see it.

3. What makes your solution different? (marketing)
In three sentences, describe what makes your solution or product uniquely valuable. Why will they pick you, not the enterprise next door?

4 Do the math. (finance)
This is the most neglected step. Aspiring entrepreneurs forget to take a look at the numbers. Can you deliver your promise at the price they are wiling to pay for? Will you make money?

5. Is the business in line with what you do well? (competence and passion) If not, how can you learn more and acquire the skills needed for the business?

6. Do your homework. (diligence) Research and learn more about the business venture that you are planning to start.

Do what you love. Love what you do.

If you are facing this dilemma, you have two options:

1. Do what you love.

2. Love what you do.

Either way, you will have to enjoy or love what you do in order to achieve success. Sticking it out for the money is fine — temporarily. But later on you will have to decide for the long-term.

So I guess the temporal thing is to “learn to love what you do” now but in the near future, the ultimate goal Is to “do what you love”.

Ningas Cogon: Finish What You Started

"FINISH WHAT YOU STARTED!” your dad yelled. You can almost see his tonsils even if you are steps away from him. It was the ‘nth’ time that you started something but didn’t pursue to continue.

Maybe some of us have heard this scolding more than once. Hard headed kids grow up hearing these words almost everyday.

In case you’re unfamiliar with ‘Ningas Cogon’, it’s a term we use to describe a certain attitude. Cogon is a type of grass that's tall and thin. You will see it in large fields. Because of its thin and dry texture, it can easily catch fire and spread into wild fire. The thing is that… the fire burns out easily as well.

Ningas Cogon is the attitude when we start something with interest and enthusiasm, then after a very short time, we lose interest and stop whatever it is we are doing. Leaving things incomplete. Just like a wild fire burning out quickly.

Here are the Ten Things that I think we should finish or complete one way or the other:

(1) Projects that we started
If you ask me, I'd prefer to start one project that I can complete immediately than start with three left unfinished. Focus and attention management is key.

(2) Relationships to Mend
Pick up the phone. Send the letter. Visit the person. Do what you need to do now. Don't wait for the right time. It might not come.
(3) Debts to Pay
This will be unavoidable. So better face it today and get on with it.

(4) Unpublished Books, Blogs, Writing, Songs or Art work. Set a daily schedule when to work on these. Don't wait for inspiration. Sit down and start writing or creating. Take one step forward everyday until you reach completion.

(5) Sales to Close
Now that the client is interested to hear from you, go ahead and submit the proposal. Prepare the presentation. Throw your pitch. Close the sale.

(6) Books to Read
Tip: No read-No buy -- Remember this next time you go to a book store.

(7) Yearly or Quarterly Goals
If you don't know where you are headed, sit down for a cup of coffee. Write down your goals for the year or at least for the quarter. Take a look at your goals as frequent as possible to keep you on track.

(8) Savings and Budgets
Maybe last January you started a savings plan or a budget, but you are not living up to it. It’s not too late to implement your plan. You can start anytime of the year. You don’t need to wait for another “New year”.

(9) Going to the gym or losing weight
If you paid for the membership, either make use of what you paid for or discontinue your membership. There is no middle ground. If you decide to quit, find a sport or physical activity that you think you will be able to sustain for a looooong time.

(10) Education or MBA
Finish your education or find ways to continue learning. It shouldn't stop.

Selling Cheaper is Not a Strategy

As a consumer, I like it when prices are low. It gives me more spending power. It allows me to get more bang for my buck.

But as an entrepreneur, I don't like to sell low. Instead, I choose to create value in the products or services that we offer. This allows us to sell at a more substantial profit. It's healthier for the business.

Don't think your customers will stick with you solely because "mas mura".

If you think a low-price strategy can give you an edge, think again. The problem with winning by selling low is that it's temporal. Customers will choose to buy from you today (while you are the lowest) but when a competitor decides to lower their prices...

Bam! You can see your customers wave goodbye.

Don't forget that the lower the price, the lesser profit margins. The more you need to push your sales people to move. Pricing lower might not improve the bottom line. In fact, it can worsen the situation.

Instead of doing that, find a way to satisfy your clients by adding value. This should increase your business. Find an unmet need, then serve it. Don't let your competition notice what you're doing. Do it under the radar.

What are key improvements that your customers are asking for? Do it. Then capitalize on this and make it your competitive advantage.

HOW TO SPEND INSTANT MONEY

Just the other day, I landed a big sale. Big enough to pay for two months worth of our family expenses. Substantial enough for a single guy to live for a year.

What's the first thing that do you do when you receive a large chunk of money?

I'll be honest. Receiving that money automatically gave me the desire to ... SPEND.

One of the first thing we did was to buy a new iPod. My wife and I have been contemplating to get one. It was because our 'Jurassic' Sony Handycam finally went to extinction last December. We need the video cam features of the new iPod for our upcoming Bohol Trip this March.

Ever since my kids were small, we've taken videos of our trips.

It has been a tradition for us to edit the best parts and turn it into home movies.

So a small part of the money went into that purchase.

Why are we not 'guilty' of this purchase? It's because even before we received the money, we already made a plan on how we will handle it.

When we were younger, we experienced how fast it was to deplete hundreds of thousands. If you don't know what you're doing that money is quick to squander.

So what's the best thing to do with Instant Money? (in no particular order)

(1) Blow Money.
Set aside more or less 5% of your money to blow away. This is not conventional wisdom. In fact, it's not really for everybody.

But if this is 'extra money' or money that you really don't need to pay for your bills, 5% is better than spending the whole amount for something.

If you've worked hard for this money and you still have more than enough to keep, give yourself a break. You can reward yourself. Buy that one gadget that you were dreaming of. Shop for new clothes. Eat out in the fancy restaurant you've been craving for.

Celebrate. The last thing that you want to feel during this favorable event is deprivation.

Spend as long as it's within the blow money.

(2) Save.
This shouldn't be the last thing on the list. In fact, it should be the first one. You have two options on how to approach this...

Equation A • Instant Money - Savings = Expenses
Equation B • Instant Money - Expenses = Savings

Equation A is more effective than Equation B. Once you start spending, the possibility to save becomes slimmer. So it's better to put it aside first.

(3) Invest.
Set aside money that will allow you to make more money. Allow it to work for you.

In this case, I used a large chunk of the money to pay for the amortization of the condominium we purchased as an investment. This will allow the property to have an early 'turn-over'. Enabling us to lease out the apartment and collect rent immediately. The plan is to let the property pay for itself later on.

Use the money for your investments or to fund your new 'money-making' venture.

(4) Pay Debt.
This is self-explanatory. I'm sure you have an idea on how to go about this.

(5) Give.
Whatever we sow, we reap. Giving is a way to acknowledge that whatever we have today is a favor received from God. Blessings are from him.

QUIT TALKING AND BEGIN DOING – WALT DISNEY

HOW TO GO TO PANGLAO BOHOL -- PART 4

5:30am – We went out to meet our bankeros (boat men) right in front of our resort. We rented a boat that can fit six people.

For the whole afternoon, we paid only P1,500. The trip includes going to the Dolphin Watching area, Balicasag Island and Puntod Island or also known as Virgin Island. Other resorts will charge you at least P2,200 to 2,400 for this service.

Along with twenty boats, we waited for the dolphins to show up. After a few minutes, we saw the dolphins take a peek. We chased them. They were so fast. All I can remember was the sound of the boat ... brooooooom.

This 'dolphin watching' was more of a dolphin "hunting" as others would say. If time is precious to you, skip it and proceed to Balicasag.

To go to the snorkeling area, you'll need to rent a small boat for P300.00. Don't forget to bring your own snorkeling gear with snorkeling shoes. (or whatever you call it)

This is definitely a fun experience. It's like watching Finding Nemo live in person. It was amazing to see a school of jack fish. (about three hundred of the same kind swimming in the same direction)

I'd recommend snorkeling in Balicasag 11 out of 10.

We ate in one of the "karinderias" by the beach front. This is paluto style. The Lapu-lapu was terrific.

By the way, the food that you see in here came from another island. Balicasag is a marine sanctuary – they're not allowed to fish within the island.

(7) Choosing a Hotel/Resort.
First, we checked Dumuluan Beach Resort.

(a) Dumuluan Beach Resort – At that time, the only room available was a P5,500 suite. The rooms were clean. You'll notice a flat screen TV mounted on the wall. It seemed a lively resort. The people we saw there were partying. I can say it's a perfect place for a barkada get-away or family reunions.

While the place seemed nice, we can’t see ourselves celebrating our 10th year anniversary there. So we moved to the next one on the list. We took a long walk along the shore and arrived at the boundary of Bohol Beach Club.

(b) Bohol Beach Club – From the boundary, the reception was so far. It was like walking several kilometers. It's a big resort.

The water front is amazing. The sand is fine white. The beach front is well-maintained. You won’t see any plastics or wrappers in the shoreline. I can say it's one of the best beach fronts in Panglao, if not the best.

As compared to Dumuluan, you can only count the number of people walking around. Probably because of its spacious land area.

However, when we looked at the rooms, we didn’t like it. The rooms were outdated in design. They could have invested in better interior design and newer furnishing.

Amazing beach front, but not so nice rooms.

We might have considered this if we weren't celebrating an important event. (maybe not) Another info to consider, Bohol Beach Club is about ten minutes ride going to Alona Beach, the spot where the restaurants, bars and other resorts are located. (similar to Boracay Station 1) You'll have to pay P600.00 for a one way trip going there. That's pricey for me.

Because it was already lunch time, we decided to eat in one of their restaurants.

At that time, there's also a buffet. (P350.00 ++) We made the right decision when we opted to order ala-carte. The food we ordered was good. (we overheard negative comments about the buffet)

After eating, we called one of the beach resorts on our list, Linaw Beach Resort. They sent a service to pick us up from Bohol Beach Club and charged us a minimal fee. The resort is only 10 minutes away. It's located in a secluded part of Alona Beach.

(c) Linaw Beach Resort is owned by a couple from Belgium. The rooms are nice. The rates are reasonable. The food is great and affordable.

Because we preferred a quiet and private place, we opted to stay there. To go to Alona Beach, we’ll just have to pay P200.00 for a one way trip. That's still cheaper compared to Bohol Beach Club's price.

After resting for an hour, we opted to go to Alona Beach where the restaurants are located. One of the service vehicles, a new Isuzu Crosswind brought us there.

To be productive (and keep yourself sane), we need to take a break from work from time to time. This will allow you to go back to work refreshed – with new ideas and insights.

PART 1 – PLANNING HOW TO GET THERE

March 28, 2009 – My wife and I was about to celebrate our 10th year anniversary. So to make it memorable, I surprised her with a 3-days 2-nights get-away. She didn't know where we were going.

We've been having our weekly dates, but it's the first time for us as a couple to go on a vacation – a plane ride away from the kids. (after 10 good years)

Planning this trip (by myself) gave my wife a lasting impression. In her eyes, I became an expert.

So to start, here goes...

(1) First, decide how to get to Panglao Bohol. You have two options.

First option – a direct flight to Tagbilaran. It's a town connected to Panglao Island. (20mins drive)

This option is more convenient. If money isn't an issue, book a direct flight.

At the time I checked, the ticket price costs P12,000+ for two persons. (may vary depending on regular offers)

Second option, a flight to Cebu for 1 hour & 15 minutes. Then a fast craft ferry ride from Cebu to Tagbilaran for 1 hour & 45 minutes.

We chose this option. I bought our airplane ticket for only P5,440 (Manila to Cebu) for the two of us – round trip. A big difference compared to a direct flight to Tagbilaran. (Even after adding up the ferry and taxi expense) As a bonus, you get to go around Cebu as well.

(2) Buy your ticket online.
Go to www.cebupacificair.com and hunt for low-rates. Be patient. Keep on clicking until you find a good deal. (Cebu Pacific should simplify their online ticketing website, but nevertheless it's still a good way to buy tickets)

You can also buy from http://www.palexpressair.com/ I just find their website a bit confusing. It's still worth a try though.

Tip: To maximize your vacation, pick a departure flight that's early and a return flight that’s a bit late. In this way, you can still maximize both the first and the last day.

(3) Buy the fast craft ferry tickets in advance.
You don’t want to waste your time waiting for the next available trip. Buy your ferry tickets a few days before your trip.

We were supposed to ride the SuperCat going there, but when we arrived in the terminal, all the seats were taken. We took another cab just to go to Pier 1 and board the OceanJet instead.

Good thing, we didn't miss the OceanJet ferry, or else, we will have to wait for another 3 hours for the next trip. So to avoid this hassle, buy the ticket in advance.

It will take at least 25 minutes to go to the Seaport from the Airport. So give it at least an hour (travel time + boarding time) allowance just to be sure.

For comfort, take SuperCat. A tourist class seat will cost P500 per person, one-way . The business class is P700 per person.

If you are on a budget, you can also try Oceanjet for only P380 per person.

What’s the difference? Riding the OceanJet is like watching a movie in an old SM Cinema. It's crowded. The seats are old. The sound is too loud. The popcorn is stale. While riding the SuperCat is like watching a movie in a Greenbelt 5 Cinema.

Got it? I'm sure you did.

If you are at least 5’9, get a business class ticket. Your wife wouldn't want to hear you complain for the entire trip because you can't move your legs.

(4) Google the resorts.
Because it's our first time to travel without the kids, I decided not to reserve a room. Instead, I made a list of the resorts we'll probably like. We checked each room/resort the first day. It was an adventure! (Don't do this if you're traveling with kids or during peak season!)

My Top 4 Choices:

(1) Bohol Beach Club

(2) Dumuluan Beach Resort

(3) A resort along Alona Beach

(4) Linaw Beach Resort

I will describe each resort later and tell you where we stayed.

PART 2 – DAY 1 AIRPORT TO PANGLAO

(5) Early Breakfast Tips.

It's quite expensive to eat breakfast in the airport. Set aside P200 per person for a decent sandwich and coffee. To save, eat a good breakfast at home. But if you have the money to spend, then go ahead.

(6) From Mactan Cebu Airport to Seaport
Upon exiting the airport, cross the street. Turn right and go up when you see the stairs. You will find the (metered) taxi terminal there. Tell the driver to bring you to the seaport – where SuperCat or OceanJet is located. SuperCat is in Pier 4. OceanJet is in Pier 1.

This should cost you around P185 – more or less. (25 minutes drive)

When you get to the port terminal, buy your tickets. (if you didn't purchase yet) Don't choose seats facing the wall or the ones facing other seats. Again, it would be best if you'll buy your tickets days in advance.

Next step, pay for the terminal fee (P10.00/head) and get a boarding pass.

You're on your way there.

(6) From Tagbilaran Seaport to Panglao Island
Upon exiting the terminal, you can easily find taxis going to Panglao Island. (20 to 30 minutes drive) Tricyle drivers will approach you and offer half of the expense. However, Panglao is a bit far for a tricycle ride. If you prefer to arrive there fresh, looking good, not harassed, pay for a cab!

The taxi ride will cost you at least P500.00 to 600.00. They might ask for P700 but you are free to negotiate.

No! I don't like quitting. I admire people who are persistent.

Even if you've heard the line, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER QUIT, there are just things in life that we should turn away from.

Here are 50 things you should quit in your lifetime. (Relationships, Health, Finance, Job, Business, Investing)

ON THE JOB

QUIT...
(1) a job that takes too much attention or doesn't leave time for your family

(2) work that forces you to compromise... morally

(3) careers or activities you are not good at

(4) work that won’t fulfill your financial responsibilities no matter how good you do

(5) a dead end job – quit eventually. The promotion is probably outside.

(6) a project that does not end

(7) from a company without any direction

(8) your boss if you won't learn anything from him

(9) doing something you don’t enjoy (or something that won’t bring any reward in the end)

(10) sleeping on the job. Do your best and show them what you got.

RELATIONSHIPS

HOW NOT TO HIT THE SNOOZE BUTTON

My cousin had problems waking up early in the morning. He is always late for work. For some reason, every time the alarm rings, his arms automatically stretches out to reach for the snooze button. It's a reflex most of use can identify with.

Habits are things that are formed by repetition. For many years, his arms and hands were programmed to stretch out and press that snooze button – even if he is still half asleep. (or half awake?)

When you press snooze, you instantly get another 10 minutes to sleep. The question is this – how many times will you press the snooze button? Once, twice or thrice?

A better question would be – what if you hit the wrong button? You hit “stop” instead! You can always tell your boss that it was traffic or an accident slowed you down. (or you can just tell him that you accidentally pressed the snooze button)

I gave my cousin a few tips that I thought would only work for me.

1.) Set an annoying alarm. The type that will wake you up, not the cute sounding tones.

2.) Place your alarm at least five steps away from you. Make sure it's not within your reach. This will force you to get up!

3.) Never go back to bed!

After several days, he thanked me and said it worked for him. He came early for work. But I’m not sure though how long it lasted!

“Try and try until you succeed” is popular motto that Pinoys overly say. Growing up, I've heard it from an unemployed relative, a one-week piano teacher and from a classmate who love girls but gets busted all the time.

However, sometimes the real problem is not with trying, but with 'expecting'.

We expect to hit the target the first time.

We expect to shoot the ball in the hoop the first time we throw it.

We expect to get a perfect score after we unwillingly give in to sing in the KTV for the first time along with friends. ("Ayoko! ayoko kumanta!" were your exact words)

We expect to close the sale the first time we make a pitch.

We expect to succeed the first time we try.

In archery, the archers use their first shot not to hit the target but to test and measure the strength and direction of the wind. This enables them to zero-in on the target with the remaining shots.

That's how they are able to hit the bull’s eye. They learn from their not–so–obvious mistakes.

Isn't that great advice for all of us?

I say don’t count on beginner’s luck. Success in business, career or in any other pursuits seldom come on the first try.

Walt Disney went bankrupt several times before he went big-time.

It was a thousand attempt, before the bulb actually lit. Maybe Thomas Edison didn't expect to get it right the first hundred attempts?

Before David knocked Goliath down, he already killed a bear and a lion while protecting his father’s sheep. A special training in which God allowed him to go thru before hitting the big bull’s eye “Goliath”.

Give yourself a break. Nobody expects you to succeed the first time anyway! (Unless if you’re a pilot or a surgeon)

Failing will not make you a “failure”. In fact, the permission to fail will liberate you.

With persistence and a resilient attitude, it's just a matter of time before you hit that bull’s eye.

15 WAYS TO BEAT THE FILIPINO TIME

Living in the Philippines, you’ll understand and experience what ‘Filipino Time’ means.

It’s like DST (daylight saving time) but only backwards. Seriously, it’s about the extra 30 minutes, 1 hour or 2 hours ---being late or tardiness that is very common and acceptable in the country.

The Pinoys abroad are exempted from this phenomenon. They are always on-time. If not, they arrive earlier than needed.

So it must be the weather then? No.
The traffic? No.
Maybe it’s because of the billboards in EDSA?
Who knows why?

Someone told me it’s because of the Spaniards being laid back then? Isn’t that the Mañana habit? I’m talking about the Filipino Time here!

Let’s say you’re throwing a birthday party for your son this Saturday. 4:00pm. But in your mind you already know that your guests will arrive at 5:00pm or 5:30pm. That’s too late. Your reservation is only up to 6pm.

So you decide to invite them at 3:00 pm instead. Thinking that they will arrive at 4:30pm. Your guests confirms. The day came. They arrive the time that you have planned or maybe a little later.

Wow! What a complicated process to plan parties!

To put an end to this problem of habitual tardiness, we need to update some of our mindsets. Here are some suggestions:

(1) It’s ok to be the first one in the party. The party planner and the caterer won’t get offended in case you arrive earlier than them.

(2) Tell the traffic -- It’s not you. It’s me.

(3) Learn the Algebra:

If x is the ETA or the the estimated time of arrival then:

x = commute time + 1hr 1/2 time allowance

(4) In case you will be way too early --- Stop over, go to Starbucks or Krispy Kreme, line-up and pretend you’re a customer. They’d be glad to offer free samples to you.

(5) Just a little adjustment -- “It’s better late than never” to “Never be late -- it’s better”

(6) Always assume that the person you will meet will arrive on-time. So you better be on time. By the way, bring a book or something that you can do just in case...

(7) Conserve water -- don’t take too long in the shower.

(8) Realize that you are smarter than you think you are. Don’t try to trick yourself by adjusting your watch 30 minutes advance. It just doesn’t work. Who are you kidding here?

(9) Forget the grand entrance. Only do this if you are royalty.

(10) The first call you will receive is not the go signal to leave the house, it means you are already 30 minutes late.

(11) If you are meeting a client, try to compute the money involved. You don’t want to lose that money right?

(12) Be realistic with time commitments. If someone asks you “Are you free to meet tomorrow at 4:00pm” --- Think carefully and if in doubt, tell him that you can be there by 5:00pm. This gives you a buffer or an allowance time. Be there by 4:45 pm.

(13) Be known as someone who arrives on time --- People will then respect your time... Hopefully...

(14) Avoid the “photo finish” arrival! (5 minutes before the person waiting for you decides to go home)

(15) If you are throwing a party, playing in a concert, producing an event, doing a presentation... Please do start on time. Politely include the word “sharp” in your language.

If we value and respect other people’s time, we will arrive on time as agreed or promised. Make this conscious effort.

Thanks to my father who taught me the value of time at an early age. Because of him, I am always on-time. (ok maybe around 98% of the time)

Likewise, let’s teach our children this virtue. It’s never too late to pass-on promptness to the next generation. We can put an end to this habitual tardiness.

Together, we can reinvent the Filipino Time!

Mañana Habit - "Mamaya na lang"

The Mañana Habit is something that we have learned from the Spaniards. The word "Mañana" means ‘tomorrow’ or ‘specified future time’ also known as “procrastination” in plain English, “mamaya na” in Filipino.

How it Works:

You need to do something now.
But then you decide to do it later.
As a result of the delay, you end up not doing it.
Now, you tell yourself or somebody that you will do it tomorrow.
Tomorrow comes. The same cycle happens.

A habit is a pattern of behavior that is acquired through frequent repetition. No amount of planning or preparation can change this. The only way to change a habit is to replace it with another habit.

My father taught me these words when I was still young:

"Do it now"…"Don’t wait till tomorrow".

At that time, I didn’t see the value of that advice. It was too pushy or overbearing to hear. But then, later on I realized that it was a valuable habit that he was teaching me.

Three Important Words to Remember – Do. It. Now.

(1) Do.
Only action can beat procrastination. Drag your feet if you have to. Starting is the only challenging part. Jump start your way into it.

(2) It.
Face whatever needs to be done. Don’t do anything else. There’s always an excuse that you can say. But don’t give in.

(3) Now.
Not later or in the future. Don’t wait for the perfect time. Even if you don’t feel like doing it. You will appreciate what you did when you reap the benefits.

‘Just do it’ is a slogan phrase that was popularized by Nike in one of their marketing campaigns. Right now it has become number two in the Top 10 Slogans of the Century.

It’s a good slogan to remember and practice. Don’t think it. Don’t plan too long. Don’t make excuses. JUST DO IT!
